About the event
Dr. Odd S. Lovoll immigrated to the U.S. from Norway with his family in 1946. He was a faculty member at St. Olaf College from 1971 until 2000. He is a well-known Norwegian-American author, historian, and educator. Odd S. Lovoll will speak about Civil War hero Hans Christian Heg within a broad historical and social context. Heg, who immigrated at age 11 with his family to Muskego, Wisconsin, became an outspoken anti-slavery activist who enjoyed a notable career in local and state politics. At the start of the Civil War, Colonel Heg rallied hundreds of Scandinavian immigrants to form the 15th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Colonel Heg’s determination to recruit troops made a national show of patriotism that gave heroic status to Heg and the 15th.
