Why People Who Translate Song Texts Always Have a Bad Conscience? Dr. Bill Halverson remembers hearing his immigrant grandfather, Syver Hagen, sing “Kan du glemme gamle Norge” with tears streaming down his cheeks. Grandpa Hagen was not alone: thousands upon thousands of Norwegian immigrants shed similar tears as they sang this song expressing love and longing for the beautiful land that they had left behind. Bill will walk us through the process of song translation and we will conclude by singing together—in honor of our Norwegian ancestors—his English version of this great immigrant song.
